Did you know that a newborn baby will latch all by itself if you put it in the correct position?? I wish I had the opportunity to try this with my own son – here is how it works.
- Sit up at a relaxed angle – so leaning back, but not lying back
- Snuggle your baby up high – between both of your breasts
- Gently stroke your baby’s back – as it comes naturally to you
- Your baby will bob their head around – support their head so that they don’t fall off of you – but don’t guide or influence direction
- After about 10 minutes or so – baby will find his/her own way and will latch on!
This is a truly beautiful and natural phenomenon! I have tried to find a video clip, but can’t find one anywhere – which is amazing to me with the technology available to us – but you can purchase the video in a variety of places if you’d like to see it.

I wonder if the baby would still naturally latch on when I have flat nipples?
Hi Miranda, I believe it would – this is actually a technique used by many lactation consultants even post birth to help moms who are having trouble getting their babies to latch. The put them in this position without telling them what is going to happen – and a lot of times, because mom is relaxed and isn’t “trying” to get the baby on, the baby will latch all on his/her own.
