We try to drive at night too when the trip is long (it's about 24 hrs to my parents house which is why we try and fly). The most important thing when travelling, or using your car at all though, is to make sure baby is properly secured in their safety seat. 90% of carseats are installed and used incorrectly so this is something important to check, especially with the roads how they are here in the winter. www.seatcheck.org

With DD1 it's always worked for us to start the trip at naptime. She'd usually take an extra long nap and then when she'd get fussy we'd stop for lunch (or dinner). Now with baby number two, we are about to make our first trip in January. She's not a fan of her carseat and doesn't usually nap in it, so we are trying to figure out a good time to go, probably right after she gets up in the morning. That's when she's usually at her most content.

Whenever possible, starting a long drive out at night works great! Give your kids their normal bedtime routine and put them in comfy jammies then start your journey. The kids will sleep through a large portion of the trip and save you some sanity.

My family drives from Georgia to Pennsylvania and back about twice a year at the minimum and this always works for us.
